I worked on an RPG called Agamemnon, set aboard a Steamrunner class ship. The participants decided it would be a great feature if the vessel could land on planets as well as transporting crew by shuttle or with the transporter beam. So I went about designing landing legs for the ship.
A few classes of Starfleet ship have been capable of landing in modern Trek, but the Steamrunner class has never been shown much, and due to its shape the legs would need to be a different design from the types we'd seen so far. The stumpy design seen on Voyager wouldn't work on this ship since the ground clearence of the 'saucer' section is quite high.
Starting off by looking at the size of the gap between the saucer's surface and the ground, I worked out a couple of designs and found the best place on the underside for them to go. I designed an apparatus that would serve as a support for the vessel and a means for the crew to reach the planet's surface. The lift would be capable of bringing down equipment as well as personnel.
Rollover this image to see how the panel on the underside extends to become a foot with the Steamrunner's deflector housing serving as a third leg.
I made a couple of control panels and then another artist, biotech produced a model of the design in 3-D.
Work in progress shots. The blue grills down the sides are ladders incase the lift were out of action.
And the completed model. It's been questioned whether there's enough room in the saucer for the landing legs to retract without interfering with the bussard collectors, but I don't think they'd take up much more than a deck.
Thanks to biotech for working on this with me. The final model looks just how I imagined it.
